Aloha! Mmmm aren’t you just hungry for some spam musubi? Growing up in Hawaii was always my favorite food to eat. It’s super easy to make and yet it is so ‘ono (delicious)! I’ll help you make your very own spam musubi!
You’ll first need 30 minutes to cook 3 cups of rice. Then you’ll need to slice a can of spam. I like to cut it about an inch in length giving me about 9 slices of spam, but that’s up to your preference.
Fry the sliced spam over medium heat in a pan. Cook each side for about 3-4 minutes to get it nice and crunchy. If you are making teriyaki spam musubi, then add in the sauce and let it cook for about a minute or two. You’ll start to see it thicken. Make sure all sides are coated with the sauce.
To assemble the musubi, place down a 3 inch wide nori (seaweed). On top of the cut nori will go the spam musubi mold. Scoop up some rice and place it in the mold. Press down on the rice with the musubi mold’s presser. Then place the cooked spam or teriyaki spam and any optional garnishing like furikake or scrambled egg. Slide the musubi out by using the presser to hold its contents in place. Finish it off by wetting the ends of the nori with water then fold it together.
And that’s it! A Hawaiian style spam musubi. Enjoy!

Hawaiian Style Spam Musubi
- Rice Cooker
- 3 cups cooked rice
- 1 can spam
- 3 sheets nori (seaweed sheet)
- 1/2 tsp furikake seasoning (optional)
- 3 eggs (optional)
- 2 tbsp shoyu (soy sauce)
- 2 tbsp white cooking wine
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 cloved crushed garlic
- Wash and cook rice in a rice cooker. Cut the nori into 3 inch wide sheets.
- Open a can of spam and slice it one inch in length. Usually comes out to 9-10 slices.
- Fry the spam on a pan over medium heat. 3-4 minutes on one side before flipping it. (Add the teriyaki sauce to the pan and let it cook for 1-2 minutes then flip it over and cook for another minute.)
- Place nori down and the musubi mold on top. Place a scoop of cooked rice in the musubi mold. Press down on the rice with the mold handle. Then add the cooked spam and push out the contents with the musubi handle while pushing the rectangle mold up and over the contents.
- Wet the ends of the nori with water and fold it towards the middle.
- Serve hot or wrap it in plastic wrap to have an on go lunch.
