About me: Aloha and e ko mo mai! Iโ€™m Tani, the creator of Ono Hawaiian Recipes and the voice behind the recipe videos youโ€™ll find here. Iโ€™m a Native Hawaiian, born and raised on Maui, where food wasnโ€™t fancy, but it was everything.

I was raised by a single father with three other kids, and money was tight. Eating out was rare, snacks were special treats, and every dollar mattered. But what we always had was home-cooked food made with care, shared around the table.

Because homemade meals were the most budget-friendly option, my dad put me in charge of cooking at a young age. At the time, I didnโ€™t realize it, but that responsibility quietly shaped my life. Cooking became second nature. It was practical, local, and always meant to be ono, even when we had to make do. I grew up eating the dishes my dad grew up with on Oสปahu, many passed down from Grandma Nakamitsu, alongside food from neighborhood parties, church gatherings, grad parties, and family get-togethers. My palate was shaped by the true mix of Hawaiสปi. Many cultures, one table.

I donโ€™t have classical culinary training, but my expertise comes from lived experience and years of hands-on work. Iโ€™ve been developing, testing, photographing, and writing recipes since 2019, all from my home kitchen. Every recipe on Ono Hawaiian Recipes is cooked by me, tested multiple times, and written with clarity so home cooks can feel confident recreating local-style dishes. My approach has always stayed the same: simple ingredients, no waste, big flavor, and food meant to be shared.

Today, I live in Utah with my husband Aaron and our two boys, Keoni and Kimo. Aaron is my built-in taste tester, and the boys are my toughest critics. Even though weโ€™re far from home, cooking local food keeps Hawaiสปi close, eases the homesickness, and helps pass our culture on to the next generation. Ono Hawaiian Recipes exists to preserve those flavors and memories, and to share the kind of food that feels like home, no matter where youโ€™re cooking from.

Life Beyond the Kitchen

In addition to running Ono Hawaiian Recipes, I work full time as a motion graphic designer, a career that shapes how I approach storytelling, visuals, and recipe videos across the site.

Iโ€™m also a mom of two energetic boys, which means most of my cooking happens in real life. Between school schedules, busy evenings, and family meals, every recipe on this site is created with practicality in mind.

Ono Hawaiian Recipes is a passion project built outside of my full-time work, but nothing about it is casual. Every recipe is developed, tested, photographed, written, and published by me. This site reflects years of lived experience, consistent effort, and a deep respect for the food and culture it represents.
